ROXY (aka Paul Rothapfel) has just returned from performing in the Baltic for Royal Caribbean Cruises on Legend of the Seas. Recently he has performed in Florida on the biggest ship in the world ‘Allure of the seas’ and was also based for a year in Manhattan, New York USA while honouring contracts with Royal Caribbean Cruises. He was performing 6 nights a week to passengers on board the Explorer of the Seas and is still endevouring to remain shore-side based in New York.
He was part of a great live entertainment team that has been recently listed as the top rating live catalogue across their fleet of 22 ships, including the 2 largest vessels in the world, Allure of the Seas and Oasis of the Seas.
Back in Australia he performed as front-man in the La Playa Collective and returned to do this again at the Soho Lounge (formerly La Playa Piano-Bar and Tapas) in Beautiful Byron Bay NSW where he recorded a new live album ‘Near enough for Jazz’
He has been currently working on a ‘Big Band’ tour under the direction of Pablo Vargas. The tour will include new versions of popular tunes, swung and funked up like no-one has heard before.
The best way to describe ROXY is a triple threat! with strong vocals, brilliant musicianship and a cheeky sense of humour, he has been rated favourite piano vocalist across 4 international cruise lines and 3 international 5 star hotel chains. Still known to have the largest repertiore of live music known internationally and a versatile range of styles, he has been described as one of the most impressive vocal impressionists around, artists include Neil Diamond, Peter Allen, Elton John, Billy Joel, Rod Stewart, Bryan Adams, Gordon Lightfoot, Neil Sedaka, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Brian Ferry, Peter Cetera, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Michael Buble, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Boz Scaggs and even Kermit the Frog… to name a few, but the real magic is in his own voice.
Always in high demand ROXY has fulfilled extensive contracts with 5 star hotels and cruise liners internationally. His career has seen him either as support act, working with or rubbing shoulders with great artists such as the Jacksons, Vince Melouney (Bee Gees and Aztecs) Lyn Bowtell (Bella), Max Merritt, Billy Thorpe, Glenn Shorrock and Diesel.
In between overseas gigs, he was always seen back in Australia entertaining patrons in many venues from small intimate piano bars and restaurants outside staged performances and special unplugged Cabaret shows in many clubs, pubs and theatres.
With most probably the most extensive song list known by any one performer internationally (4000 songs and melodies including over 30 hours of continuous live band recorded backing tracks) ranging from the classics to the new millennium or Diana Krall to Michael Buble style lounge Jazz to Angels to Cold Chisel style rock), he can cater to any taste using his three tools of trade, a grand piano, blues harp and his voice. Or if you want to get up and boogie you can with his extensive ‘Party Repertoire’ featuring custom (non midi) live recorded backings guaranteed to smoke up the floor and get your mojo going.
Following a successful 8 year season at the Kent Hotel in Newcastle, ROXY headed north to open his first self named venue and he was one of several proprietors of ROXY’s Piano Bar in Brisbane, until it ceased operation in June 2011 following a downturn in the local economy owing to recent catastrophic floods in the South East Queensland. It was then he took up residence in USA where he is being well recieved by NY and NJ locals on one of the largest ocean liners in the world.
